Love milkshakes, but hate the calorie content? Then try my 3 ingredient healthy alternative! The secret to its creaminess lies in the frozen banana! Try it and be amazed!
I’ve been sitting on this recipe for a while…
OK… more than a while. More like a year.
I have been meaning to blog the recipe for ages, I pretty much lived on these milkshakes last Summer, they were just perfect for a hot Summer’s lunch.
But, I didn’t have the right glasses…
#foodbloggerproblems
I finally found said glasses last week and knew that the first thing I’d photograph in them would be this milkshake.
I first saw a milkshake recipe with frozen banana as the base on Sally’s Baking Addiction last year.
When I first tried them, it was honestly life changing.
I’ll admit I love a milkshake. But I don’t love what all that ice cream does to my hips. Hello, I have skinny jeans to fit into. Even with stretch, they only go so far.
So, when I first froze an overly ripe banana and then blitzed it up in the mixer, I was amazed at how like soft churn ice cream it was.
And how perfect it was for the base of a milkshake! If you haven’t tried it yet, you seriously need to!!
Just look how creamy it is!!
I’ve made all manner of flavour combinations over the last year; strawberry and banana, raspberry, blackberry… Sometimes I want the other fruits to take pride of place and the banana base is still perfect as it’s not too overpowering.
Other times, I want to mix Strawberries and Bananas and taste both, again frozen banana is the way forward.
It’s so versatile, with just a few ingredients you can have something which tastes like it should have so many more calories!
I’m a sucker for a recipe which cuts calories, whilst not tasting like it!
Don’t know about you, but it kind of makes me feel like I beat the system. I feel like I should be feeling naughty, but I know that actually it’s healthy and I can enjoy it and know I won’t feel huge tomorrow morning! 😀
Even though I make many variations of this recipe, (more flavours coming to the blog soon!) my go to flavour is this Vanilla Banana Milkshake.
You get the fresh taste of the banana, the cool, smooth, creamy texture and then just a little sweetness from the vanilla added to the mix. Simple, but oh so good. I find myself going back to this again and again when I want a refreshingly cool lunch.
So, grab some bananas; freeze them, blitz them up with some milk and vanilla and be converted to luscious milkshakes you can drink all Summer long!

Healthy Vanilla Banana Milkshake
Ingredients
- 2 medium bananas, sliced and frozen. (The riper the better!)
- 1 cup milk, I used skim
- 4 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Place all ingredients into a food processor and blitz until smooth and creamy.
- Be sure to give it a good blitz (45 seconds - 1 minute) even if all the banana chunks have gone, mixing for longer makes it creamier.
- Pour into glasses and serve immediately.

I love recipes using frozen bananas! Got to try this soon!
Hi Annie,
When I see shakes or smoothies, I rush to explore the recipe, so I hopped over to your blog from Turn it Up Tuesday and I am so delighted! Fortunately, I have all of the ingredients to make your healthy vanilla banana milkshake, but I will use Almond Milk instead. All the best, Deborah

So easy but looks good! Pinning, thanks. 🙂
This will be perfect for an on-the-go breakfast! We’ve got a ton of bananas right now and I think I am going to have to stick a few in the freezer! So glad you linked this up with us at Foodie Fridays! Pinning! 🙂

I still can’t get over how creamy they are when blitzed! Hope you enjoy this milkshake!
Let me know how it tastes with almond milk, I’d love to try it with different milks, but I’m allergic to nuts!
Thanks so much, hope you enjoy it – has been life changing for me as I can enjoy them and know I’m not putting bad things into my body!
Thank you 🙂
Thank you so much! Haha, the things we do! I imagine to most people it doesn’t matter what glass it’s in, but for food bloggers it can be one of the most important things!

Oh my! Found this last night … just so happened to have frozen bananas on hand and some almond milk that I’ve been dying to try and hadn’t yet, plus some homemade vanilla extract…. grabbed the blender and gave it a go…. I absolutely LOVE this!! Thank you so much for sharing it! As a matter of fact I loved it so much I got up this morning and made two more batches to share with everyone at work …. I think I shared with 13 coworkers … they ALL loved it too!
Thank you SO much! Your comment totally made my day! So glad you loved it, first time I tried it I couldn’t believe how such simple ingredients could turn out to be so delicious! Is almond milk slightly sweeter than normal? I can’t have it as I’m allergic to nuts, but am always interested in alternatives!
I take it you just throw the frozen banana into the blender no need to thaw it out first?
Yes, no need to thaw the banana first, that’s what gives the milkshake it’s creamy, almost ice cream like texture!
HI, I just saw your tweet and thought I’d stop by to take a look at this deliciousness. On my “to do” list to try. Sounds amazing and love the ease of making it! 🙂
I’m drinking this as I type! LOVE LOVE LOVE the naughty feeling healthy goodness.
I’m sorry you felt like my post was unnecessarily long, but this is my personal blog and I can post what I like. I am not forcing you to read it.
Vanilla almond milk also works great and I throw in a few ice cubes so it’s extra thick… and for a full flavored banana shake I used banana extract instead of vanilla and it’s amazing!!!!
